SYREETA - Syreeta (1972) / Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta (1974) / Syreeta (1980)

Three killers from Syreeta, her first album, title Syreeta, Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta and anothe homonym from 1980!! First we have the debut Syreeta, an amazing bit of Soul that mixes incredible vocals, great songwriting, and cool spacey moog playing!! The vibe is amazing, and most of the tracks have these really spare electronics backing up Syreeta's lovely soulful voice!! Then Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta, Syreeta's second album for Motown, and a much more slickly produced session than the first. Her husband Stevie Wonder is all over the album, and in a way, the shift between this album and the first is similar to the shift between Stevie's Music Of My Mind and later efforts like Talking Book or Innervisions. The songs were all written by Stevie and Syreeta, and they're mostly a sweet batch of love songs that work perfectly with Syreeta's sweet Minnie Riperton-esque vocals (and incidentally, Minnie sings backup vocals on the album, along with Denise Williams, who copped a similar style)!! And finally, Syreeta from 1980, a beautiful spacey Soul one, and proof that she was one of Motown's great lost talents!! Syreeta's high Minnie Riperton-esque voice is backed by a smooth set of mellow grooves with lots of cool electronic bits and weird moogy parts that remind us of Leon Ware's "Musical Massage" album!! The whole thing's a wonderful blend of spacey Soul, and we rank it right up there with the best work by Ware, Riperton, and some of our other mellow Soul favorites!!
